I have realised I have a lot of passion for names - but very little interest in writing about them. If you are linked to this blog by back reading posts on Appellation Mountain I apologise. But thanks for taking a peak :)

Last day.

Tomorrow is my last technical day of school. Which just seems odd considering the fact I've already had two exams. But anyway - tomorrow is the day that is assigned each year, to say goodbye to the leavers. 

So au revoir my dear school. For you have treated me well - for the most part anyway!

The thing about...Anthony

I have never met an Anthony who was after the 1970s, maybe that has something to do with living in Britain? Or maybe just where I live. Anthony, does not in fact even rank in the top 100 in England, so why it so popular over the pond?


Derived from the Roman name Antonius, Anthony or even Antony has a long history - and has been used in many languages since then.

• Anton - German and Russian
• Antonio - Italian 

It's meaning is just as pleasant - priceless. Though hardly a macho meaning by any stretch.

How Anthony fit's into a 2010/11 naming society I just am not sure, to me it still has a typical 1970s feel. It is too long to compete with likes of Chase or Logan, and the nicknames, Ant or Tony again do nothing for me, but evidently they have some appeal in the US. Maybe someone could tell me why? Or maybe it is a default name? Like John or David.

An apology.

I am sorry that I abandoned this blog. Mainly because Abby links to  it for every name I suggest for NOTD over on Appellation Mountain.
The layout I used for the first few posts is simply too labor intensive for me at the moment. Therefore I will be changing things slightly, in an effort to update the blog more often I will post about names that are interesting me at the moment. Possible name combinations. My thoughts on names for siblings etc. The format will be far less rigid, and possibly in depth, but overall I should be able to post more often and that can only be a good thing.
If you have any queries, possible naming problems or an interesting story to tell just let me know.

The thing about...Mia

Ranked number ten in 2009 Mia, as a full name is generally considered to be of Latin,  Scandinavian and Israeli descent. With it being a shortening of Maria in Scandinavia and Michal in Israel. However some state it to be of Italian origin.
Therefore, it meaning is often left to interpretation, and varies greatly between different books and websites. If you look at it's Scandinavian origin then it means 'Sea of Bitterness', perhaps not the most lovely of meanings, however Maria means 'wished for child' and in Italian it simply means 'my', two much more pleasant meanings.

Today, as well as a full name Mia is also used as a nickname for many longer names, with Amelia being the most popular - think Amelia Mignonette Grimaldi Thermopolis Renaldo, of the 'Princess Diaries' books and movie - who chose to go by Mia. 


Possible alternate spellings - Not many for Mia, however Mere is a very unusual alternative and is pronounced the same way, with Mere being (in British English) a lake that is broad in relation to it's depth.


The Verdict - A delightful, simple name which like Kate, may always sound like a nickname to some.

'It's All In The Name'

I have always been fascinated by names, the way they sound, their history, their origin - and why parents decide to name their child a particular name. 

As such, this blog will, hopefully, be a way of ridding my self of the millions of scraps of paper that litter my drawers and the lists that cover my note books, that are full of names and name combinations. And maybe even a place for people to voice their opinion on names, or query their naming strife. 

Because, your name, love it or hate it, is the single most important part of who you are.
